Degradation

Every effect on this site has a stated answer to “what if this cannot run”. That is the difference between a site that breaks and one that gets simpler.

A pinned deck needs height and JavaScript. It gives up in four situations, all landing on the same plain list:

  1. Reduced motion. The visitor asked.
  2. Under 600 pixels of viewport height. Also what 400 percent zoom looks like.
  3. A runtime measurement. After layout, the page checks whether a card actually fits. Media queries know the viewport; they do not know this visitor’s text size or this card’s copy length.
  4. No JavaScript. A noscript block renders the list. Without it, all seventeen cards stack in a single grid cell.

JavaScript blocked entirely. A class is added to the root only when the bundle runs, and every JavaScript-dependent starting state is gated on it, so a blocked script leaves a usable page rather than invisible content.

Assets blocked. All page CSS is inlined rather than served from a separate asset path, because a corporate proxy on one of Steve’s machines blocked those requests and broke the styling. Inline styles cannot be blocked.

Fonts unavailable. Both faces have real fallback stacks, and font-synthesis: none on the display face so a missing Nickel is not faked by smearing Inter.

Windows High Contrast Mode. Anything painted with a background rather than a border is given an explicit override, because HCM forces backgrounds.

The measured fallback is the important idea

The first three are conditions you can predict. The fourth is not: it measures the actual rendered result and reacts.

That is what catches the case nobody listed, and it is the reason the deck survives a visitor with larger text on a phone size nobody tested.

  1. Turn off JavaScript. Every card and quote is visible.
  2. Turn on reduced motion. Same.
  3. Resize to 402 by 590. The list appears; nothing is clipped.
  4. Resize from 280 to 1920. No horizontal scrolling at any width.
